The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka has passed a resolution cutting the transportation fare being charged on students of the institution by keke and buses drivers operating within the school premises.
This was passed by the joint session of the house in a plenary which was presided over by the Honourable Speaker of the house Rt. Hon. Uchechukwu Okwuchukwu on the 19th of May 2017.
The motion which was sponsored by a member representing Metallurgical and Materials Engineering constituency in the house Hon. Michael Oragwa Izuchukwu was seconded by the Majority Leader of the house and chairman House Committee on Media and Publicity Hon. Umeh Chiemerie who represents Mechanical Engineering constituency in the SUG legislative arm.
Presiding over the session, the speaker of the house Rt. Hon. Uchechukwu encouraged the arrival such motion, which he said is aimed at ameliorating the plights of the students who they represent.
As approved by the house, the motion with the title “Motion For Reduction Of Transportation Fare Within The School Premises” contains three core recommendation, viz:
1. That the cost of transportation from Permsite Bus Stand (Garuba Square) to anywhere within the school premises be N40 per head.
2. That the cost of transportation to the Permsite Bus Stand (Garuba Square) from anywhere within the school premises be N40 per head.
3. That the cost of transportation to anywhere within the school premises other, excluding the main Bus Stand (Garuba Square) be N30 per head.
Transportation to and from Garuba Square Bus Stand (whether by keke, shuttle or bus) is kept at N40, as the drivers are always charged TTF that place, being a strategic point, while transportation to and from any other place within the school premises, excluding the bus stand is slashed to N30 per head; except by charter.
This simply implies that when a student is moving from Bank to Utility Building, from Law Faculty to Science Village etc he/she is to pay N30 and no more N40 as before, since the union doesn’t take any levy from the drivers at any of these points.
The was considered by the house to be fair to the both parties – the students and drivers, and will also help to impair the difficulties and burden of the students.
While passing the motion, the 24th assembly avow and reiterated their commitment towards fairing things for their people (the students) who found them worthy and elected into the well-envied position.
The honourable house also re-professed their stand that serving to the best interest of their people would always remain their top priority and utmost aim, as they are called to serve and not to be served.
It now behoves on the executive arm of the SUG, for the full implementation of this resolution which is going to start with immediate effect.
