SATURDAY racing comes to you today from Royal Randwick and Caulfield. All the last minute tips and best bets from Daily Telegraph racing editor Ray Thomas.
Weather: Mild, sunny day with a forecast top temperature of 22c.
Track: Heavy (8)
Rail: 7m out 1600m to winning post, 5m out remainder
Weather: Cool, sunny day with a forecast top temperature of 19c.
Track: Good (4)
Rail: 4m out
Randwick’s rail has been shifted to 7m out for the third successive Saturday race meeting on a track rated heavy 8. Over the previous two weeks the track tended to favour those closer to the rail although the bias wasn’t as pronounced last week, The expectation is for the track to play similarly today with the inside slightly superior going in the straight. The Caulfield rail is out 4m today but with a good surface, the track should race fairly.
THE BEST BET: Acatour (race three) could not have been more impressive when he put a margin of nearly four lengths on his chasing rivals in the Carbine Club Stakes. He ran the 1600m right out in testing conditions two weeks ago and I have no issue with him at 2000m on Saturday. Acatour, jockey Blake Shinn and Team Snowden are a form combination — stick with them.
THE NEXT BEST: New Tipperary (race five) was wide throughout and ran a blinder when just edged out by It’s Somewhat in the Ajax Stakes at Rosehill when second-up from a spell. New Tipperary then went to the Doncaster two weeks ago and wasn’t suited by the heavy track conditions but ran a very well again to finish seventh to It’s Somewhat again. The heavy track is a concern but he got through it well enough in the Doncaster and made ground out wide where very few were able to last start. The 2000m trip will suit and if the track improves into the soft by race 5, then that will be a further boost to his chances.
VALUE BET: God’s In Him (race nine) resumes today and has struck a race with plenty of depth. His two trials don’t read well on paper and he failed to beat a rival to the line in his most recent trial last Monday but he was never let go and was bolting on the line. He has a very good first-up record, excels at Randwick and is effective in heavy going. At $7 he represents each way value.
THE WHISPER: Raiment (race eight) is favourite but still at attractive odds of $4.60 for the Carr Stakes. The Godolphin mare was half those odds last start when she disappointing when seventh to Diddums in the Bell Stakes. But the Randwick track favoured those on the inside that day and Raiment was never closer than three wide without cover and tired late to run seventh. Her previous run resulted in a dynamic win in the Birthday Card Stakes at Rosehill. Drawn awkwardly again but she is talented mare at backable odds today.
THE BEST BET: We have to wait for the last race on the 10-event program for the best bet at Caulfield but it will be worth it because French Emotion (race 10) looks hard to beat. She had been racing in Sydney where she isn’t as effective, albeit at stakes level, but she races better in Melbourne as she indicated last start when a closing behind the brilliant I Am A Star in the Sunline Stakes, French Emotion has been improved by four runs from a spell, indicated a return to form last start, she races well at Caulfield and is looking for this trip now.
NEXT BEST: Hans Holbien (race six) is a former Irish galloper who showed staying promise as a younger horse winning the Group 3 Chester Vase and running seventh to champion Golden Horn in the English Derby. He has taken a couple of preparations to acclimatise in Australia but there were very encouraging signs at Bendigo last start when he stormed past his rivals to win by a widening four lengths. Progressive stayer in the Lloyd Williams team and he can continue his winning momentum today.
VALUE BET: Tarquin (race nine) has had two runs back from a spell and he caught the eye when working home nicely to the line when fifth to Observational in the Golden Mile at Bendigo. He is third-up today and last spring at the same stage of his preparation he ran very well when third to Real Love in the JRA Cup. He hasn’t won for 12 months but he is a talented horse once he gets out to a middle distance. He is around the $17 mark and is a good each way bet in a tough race.
THE WHISPER: Arod (race eight) has been disappointing this autumn including his struggling effort on a heavy track in the Doncaster last start. A Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter in England, Arod has only shown glimpses of his best form down under. He did run a very good second in the Liverpool City Cup three starts back and last spring beat all but Rageese in the Chatham Stakes, Back on firm ground today and in easier grade he is expected to run a much better race.
