#AnambraDecides: INEC To Begin Distribution Of Election Materials On Wednesday

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it would commence, on Wednesday, the distribution of materials for the November 18 gubernatorial election in Anambra State.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu announced this in Awka, the state capital, while addressing staff of the commission ahead of Saturday’s election.

He explained that the materials will be moved to the various local governments that make up Anambra State before being distributed to the polling units a day before the poll.

Mr. Yakubu noted that the electoral body had already provided the necessary logistics, including funds, for the free and smooth conduct of the election.

He said the electoral body was prepared to organize a transparent election in the state, noting that arrangements were being made to ensure a credible poll on Saturday.

Mr. Yakubu added that there was a need for heads of the units in the commission to work closely with their subordinates in order to achieve success during election.

The INEC boss also explained that the electoral body was set to make history by ensuring that the Anambra State election is flawless and free of complaints from the electorates in the state.

“The deployment of materials to local governments will commence on Wednesday this week while the sensitive materials will be shared a day before the election,” he said.

He said that Saturday’s election will be a litmus test for INEC ahead of the 2019 general election.

Mr. Yakubu also warned staff of the commission against being compromised ahead of the November 18 gubernatorial election in Anambra State.

According to him, any staff of the electoral body caught engaging in malpractices during the election will be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country.

“You must make sure you get to the polling units by 8 a.m. on the election to make sure that things work according to plan. There are many people out there working seriously to see that the commission fails in its commitment to record free, fair and credible election, and you must have this in mind.

“INEC will get rid of you if you do the wrong thing. You are aware that those caught in the web of such negative acts during the conduct of the 2015 election are still facing the music,” he  warned.

Mr. Yakubu said that INEC will be holding two elections in Anambra State on Saturday and charged its staff to be upright in the conduct of their duties.

“INEC will be holding two elections in Anambra on November 18: the governorship election and the State Assembly election for Idemili North State Constituency,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in the state, Mr. Nkwachukuwu Orji, said the electoral body has conducted training for the ad-hoc staff that would mostly be used for the Anambra State governorship election.

Mr. Orji said the commission will ensure the smooth conduct of the Saturday poll, adding that the staff have been warned against any act of indiscipline and fraud.

SaharaReporters gathered that the state is already tense as the candidates of the various political parties participating in the election are now rounding off their campaigns ahead of the weekend poll.

No fewer than thirty-five political parties will be participating in the governorship election in Anambra State.
