RETIRED NFL star Todd Heap struck and killed his three-year-old daughter on Saturday (AEST) in what is being called a tragic accident.

The former Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals tight end was moving his truck forward in his driveway when the child was hit, according to Arizona police. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials said Heap showed no signs of impairment but added the investigation is ongoing.

Heap played 12 seasons in the NFL, 10 with the Ravens and his last two with the Cardinals, retiring in 2012. He was selected to Pro Bowls in the 2002 and 2003 seasons and amassed 5,869 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career.

Heap, who was selected in the first round of the 2001 draft, played his final two seasons with the Cardinals before retiring in 2012.

Heap is a native of Mesa and was a standout for the Arizona State Sun Devils before being taken by Baltimore with the 31st pick in the 2001 draft.
