The deal with Warner Bros. Entertainment includes exclusive streaming rights to ‘Almost Human,’ ‘Babylon 5’ and ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.’
Verizon’s g090 app has struck a deal for exclusive streaming rights to genre hits including Veronica Mars and Fringe as it continues its pursuit of a young, mobile-first audience.
The series will join go90, a free, ad-supported app, as part of a deal struck with Warner Bros. Entertainment that includes the exclusive rights to Almost Human, Babylon 5, Believe, Stalker and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Veronica Mars will become available in May, while the rest will begin streaming on go90 on April 4.
“We are thrilled to partner with go90, enabling their users to access the great stories captured by these seven series,” said Ken Werner, president of WB Domestic Television Distribution. “We anticipate these series will expand and build on g090’s fast-growing user base.”
Verizon launched go90 in the fall of 2015 with a slate of short-form originals, live sports and some primetime television episodes. But the app has struggled to find an audience amid fierce competition for online eyeballs. The app recently underwent a redesign — led by the company’s acquisition of Jason Kilar’s Vessel late last year — and has focused on more targeted genres of video, including live sports, comedy, sci-fi and gaming, music and dramas.
Go90’s deal with Warner Bros., which represents the first time the app has acquired exclusive, full series rights to traditional TV programming, is seen as a way to bolster sci-fi programming for the newly created Saga network. All episodes of the seven series will be available on go90 with commercial breaks.
“To be able to bring these seven titles to our users is a great opportunity to continue to double down on a genre that’s performed well for go90 and attract users who have been demanding these series or may be discovering them for the first time,” said Chip Canter, general manager of Verizon Digital Entertainment, which oversees go90. He added that the deal showcases the company’s effort to serve specific audiences with original and library content. “These series are a great fit for our go90 Saga network.”
