HARRY Styles has ended Ed Sheeran’s chance of making Australian chart history, but Lady Gaga could be about to blow both of them away.
Styles’ Sign Of the Times entered the ARIA singles chart at No. 1 this week, the first solo single for the One Direction member.
That ended Ed Sheeran’s 13 week run at No. 1 — he was on track to beat ABBA’s record of 14 weeks on top in 1976 with Fernando.
Sheeran’s Shape Of You is still the longest-running No. 1 this century.
However the song looks unlikely to have a second run on top.
It has finally been dethroned on Spotify — with rapper Kendrick Lamar’s Humble now the most streamed song in Australia, 60,000 ahead of Shape Of You.
Lamar’s new album Damn. is also outselling Sheeran’s Divide on the iTunes album chart.
There’s also a surprise contender for next week’s No. 1 single in Lady Gaga, who released a brand new song, The Cure, this weekend.
The new song is a more deliberately commercial R & B direction after her divisive rock-flavoured Joanne project.
The Cure is already No. 1 on iTunes and is outselling No. 2 — Sheeran’s next single Galway Girl — by two to one.
Styles’ song has slipped to No. 4 on iTunes and No. 21 on Spotify.
The song is a grower, which may mean in the world of instant pop it could take longer for people to discover it.
Sign Of the Times is also No. 1 in the UK, also dethroning Sheeran.
However the sales were unexpectedly low — Styles sold 62,900 first week copies, half of what bandmate Zayn Malik sold last year in the UK with Pillow Talk (112,000).
The song is also No. 1 in Scotland, and Top 10 in France, Italy, New Zealand and Ireland.
Styles performed Sign Of the Times on Saturday Night Live this weekend, as well as premiering new song Ever Since New York.
Styles’ self-titled debut album is released on May 12 and will be available on CD (a special edition has a 32 page photo book) as well as gatefold vinyl.
It is in keeping with Styles’ music heading in a more credible singer/songwriter alternative feel to his One Direction days — and former band mates.
Meanwhile Gaga’s song is topping iTunes charts around the world.
She played the song during her Coachella headline set — where she replaced the pregnant Beyonce, who pulled out on doctors’ orders.
Gaga will use this week to film scenes for her remake of A Star Is Born, where Bradley Cooper will make his directorial debut.
Audience members have been asked to wear “denim, boots and stetson hats” for a country themed concert filmed on the Coachella stages tomorrow and Wednesday.
Coachella also takes place again next weekend — with all the same acts performing once more.
The new A Star Is Born is due out in September next year.
