How ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Is Creeping Out Comic-Con

The wonderfully executed stunt captures one of the trailer’s most arresting moments.

A Wrinkle in Time already conquered the internet last week when the first trailer dropped. Now, the ambitious project from director Ava DuVernay is taking on San Diego Comic-Con.

Though Disney is not having a panel to show off Wrinkle in Time (like Star Wars and Pixar, the film got its due last weekend at D23), the studio on Thursday is executing a stunt to get more people hyped for it.

Re-creating one of the more arresting moments in the trailer, a group of 30 children and retro-dress housewives are popping up in various locations around the Convention Center, red rubber balls in hand, dribbling as they go. They end up in front of a bus with a Wrinkle in Time display, which includes different images from the film.

The stunt is managing to be just as eerie and attention-grabbing as the moment in the trailer, which depicts the planet of Camazotz, a key part of Madeleine L’Engle’s novel. On Camazotz, everyone is (seemingly) happy and peaceful, children bouncing their balls in unison. In reality, they live in a world in which individualism has been eliminated and its residents are controlled by a single entity called the IT.

The sprawling cast for Wrinkle in Time is led by young star Storm Reid, and also includes Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine and Zach Galifianakis.

In the trailer, Meg (Reid), Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and Calvin (Levi Miller) are quite unsettled when coming across the children and their mothers, particularly when one of the women asks them, “Are you lost?” (Check it out around the 1:07 mark, below).

A Wrinkle in Time is set to open March 9, 2018.
