Lassa Fever Kills Three In Bauchi State

Dr. Halima MukaddasThe Bauchi State Government says there is no confirmed case of cerebrospinal meningitis in the state, but three persons have been confirmed dead following an outbreak of Lassa fever disease.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Halima Mukaddas, confirmed this latest development to Channels Television in Bauchi.

She said two other patients are currently undergoing treatment at the Isolation Centre of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi.

Dr. Mukaddas admitted that curbing the spread of Lassa fever in the state remains a challenge, owing to the non-availability of diagnostic laboratories in the region and the problem of patients who sometimes refuse to be quarantined.

She, however, said series of public education and enlightenment campaigns are being carried out to prevent further spread of the disease.

The Commissioner called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, site at least one laboratory in the North-east region, for better management of Lassa fever.

She said the closest laboratory they can get is in Edo State, with samples being sent through courier services.
