JOSH and Amy Meeuwissen have finally been eliminated from My Kitchen Rules.
The controversial West Australian couple scored a dismal 31 out of 130 for their ultimate instant restaurant cook to crash out of the competition.
The pair’s cooking was so bad that an increasingly frustrated Manu Feildel blew a gasket giving Josh, the show’s self-appointed “seafood king”, the rounds of the kitchen.
Feildel and fellow judge Pete Evans gave the Meeuwissens a wretched 19 out of 70 for their three-course meals including ones for dessert and a two and a one for the main course.
The Meeuwissens had to score better than Karen Gawne and Ros Waters’ 67 out of 130 to stay in the show.
The Meeuwissens plated up entrees of whitebait with chilli lime mayo and picked cucumber plus seafood chowder with damper.
Mains were pork belly adobo with lime and coriander rice plus blue swimmer crab with citrus spinach salad.
Desserts were Koeksisters Meet San Pedro (South African doughnuts with dessert drink) plus crema catalana with Spanish biscotti.
Things got off to a rocky start when Josh shocked wife Amy by saying “we’ll be divorced after this” as they were plating up the chowder.
Amy clearly didn’t know whether Josh was serious or joking and seemed rattled throughout the rest of the cook.
Evans described the whitebait as “lacklustre”. “There are three components to this dish and none of them shone on the plate,” Evans said.
Feildel turned angry when it came to judging the seafood chowder.
“This plate is a picture of stress,” Feildel fumed. “This is not a great representation of what you’ve been selling to us, Josh. You’ve talked this whole competition about your love of seafood and your knowledge of seafood.
“This damper is still in its raw form. You don’t blitz vegetables in a seafood chowder. It becomes a vegetable soup.”
Josh brushed off the criticism but Amy was wounded. Another blow came when Amy discovered that Josh had used all the coriander to marinate the crabs for main which meant that any notion of coriander rice was out the window.
Amy got so distraught she forgot about the pork belly on the stove and the sauce is over-reduced.
Fair to say Evans didn’t enjoy the finished pork belly dish.
“Yours was quite heavy with soy,” Evans said. “I need something else to deal with this really intense saltiness. Not enjoyable after the second bite.”
But Feildel really let fly when he tasted the crab that Josh had marinated in what seemed like half a dozen bottles of white wine and various herbs.
“Blue swimmer crab is one of my favourite seafoods,” Feildel started. “There is absolutely no need in this world to be marinating crab in a white wine solution.
“The acidity of your wine cured the meat of your crab so before you even cooked it you were in trouble (and) the salad doesn’t really make sense.
“You’ve got a big voice and you’re not scared to say what you think and well I’ve got to do the same to you tonight. If you were sitting her tonight you would take this apart (with criticism).”
Amy started to flame out.
“This night has just been blow after blow after blow,” Amy said. “It is embarrassing. I’m so over this. You (Josh) don’t know what you’re doing.”
It got worse.
“You’re a dickhead — I’m going to walk out on you and not do this,” Amy said, storming out of the kitchen.
Josh asked Amy if she wanted to pull out of the competition and forfeit but Amy cooled down and returned.
“I’ve just got to find some inner strength and suck it up,” Amy said.
But dessert bought its own share of headaches. Josh couldn’t get the sugary top of the crème Catalana to harden.
“I’m not sure either of these desserts should have made it to the ultimate instant restaurant round,” Evans said. “The (Koeksisters) doughnut is very dense and very sweet and the drink (San Pedro) is very sweet and very alcoholic.”
Feildel saved the worst for last. “It consistency of the crème Catalana is liquid,” Feildel said. “There is no flavour whatsoever. It is pure sugar. The brulee is not even brulee. It is melted sugar. I just don’t know. It is not even funny anymore.”
Rival teams gave the Meeuwissens 19 out of 70. Feidlel scored 3 for entree, 1 for main and 1 for dessert. Evans scored 4 for entree, 2 for main and 1 for dessert.
“I don’t feel all that bad about being eliminated,” Josh said after the scores were announced. “We’re still standing and I feel that after a couple of months of marriage counselling we’ll be back on track.”
A week ago Amy was forced to extinguish rumours that the couple had separated after their elimination.
Tonight’s episode ended with the couple seemingly still very much in love.
“I’m so proud of you babe,” Josh told Amy. “You always stuck by my side and backed me up. You’re such a great wife.”
Amy responded with “I’m proud of you babe. You never stopped being you, even though people got upset by that.”
