Jets send Jones packing0:39
A-League: The Newcastle have sacked their coach after he took them to the team’s third wooden spoon.
JUST days after clinching the wooden spoon and sacking coach Mark Jones, the embattled Newcastle Jets finally have some good news with the club snaring Central Coast Mariners striker Roy O’Donovan.
O’Donovan rejected offers from A League finals contenders Western Sydney and Brisbane and also knocked back deals from Adelaide and the Mariners to commit to the Jets despite the fact the club could be weeks away from signing a new coach for next season.
The Daily Telegraph understands the Jets will announce O’Donovan’s signing within the next 48 hours.
After being a real chance of making the finals just six weeks ago, the Jets collapsed in a heap, conceding 17 unanswered goals to finish at the bottom of the ladder following their final round 2-0 loss to Sydney FC on Saturday night.
Jones was sacked by the club’s Chinese owner Martin Lee on Sunday morning, just hours after the defeat, but the decision did not impact the club’s negotiations with O’Donovan, who finished the season with 11 goals for the struggling Mariners.
The Jets have already added Daniel Georgievski, Kosta Petratos and Mario Shabow to their roster for next season but any further signings are expected to be left to the incoming coach.
Imports Morten Nordstrand, Mateo Poljak and Ma Leilei head a list of 10 players off contract including Andrew Hoole, Daniel Mullen, Ben Kantarovski, Labinot Haliti, Harry Sawyer, Kristian Brymora and Joel Allwright.
