'Planet Earth II' Leads BAFTA TV Craft Nominations

The BBC’s acclaimed nature series emerged with nine nominations, followed by ‘The Crown’ with seven and six for ‘The Night Manager.’

Only Netflix’s big-budget The Crown prevented the BBC from claiming a near clean sweep of the BAFTA TV Craft nominations, celebrating the best behind-the-scenes work on the small screen in 2016.

The Golden Globe-winning show nabbed seven nominations, one ahead of the BBC/AMC co-produced spy thriller The Night Manager (of which there are now rumblings of a second season).

However, neither Queen Elizabeth II or Tom Hiddleston could come close to Planet Earth II. The BBC’s acclaimed natural history series claimed nine BAFTA TV Craft nominations in the editing: factual, original music, photography: factual and sound: factual categories.

Elsewhere, Channel 4’s mini-series National Treasure and Netflix’s dark anthology series Black Mirror (formerly of Channel 4) shared five nominations each.

Fleabag, the BBC’s breakout comedy show, picked up three nominations, including writer: comedy and breakthrough talent for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, currently filming the Star Wars Han Solo spin-off.

The BAFTA TV Craft winners will be announced on April 23 at a ceremony hosted by Episodes star Stephen Mangan.
