Disney and Lucasfilm partner for new animated series, merchandise and book line based on Leia, Rey and the other women of the Rebellion and Resistance.
As part of the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebrations, Star Wars has announced a new push towards recognizing the women who’ve fought the good fight across the past four decades.
The primary of Star Wars: Forces of Destiny is a series of online animated shorts focusing on Leia, Rey, Jyn Erso, Star Wars: Rebels‘ Sabine Wren and The Clone Wars‘ Ahsoka Tano. They will be narrated by Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata. The series, produced by Disney and Lucasfilm and intended for Disney’s YouTube channel, will lead into a two-part special of new adventures to air on Disney Channel this fall.
“Star Wars: Forces of Destiny is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are. It is a fun new way for people to experience Star Wars.”
Forces of Destiny will go beyond the animated series, with action figures, books and other merchandise based around the Forces branding already prepared for release throughout the year. In many ways, the new line is similar to Warner Bros.’ DC Super Hero Girls property launched last year; that line, which includes animation, books, toys and other merchandise aimed at the young girl market, has been a strong seller in multiple areas.
