THE breakfast TV wars will see Sunrise broadcast from the Logies for the first time in years in a bid to one-up rivals Today.
Confidential can reveal the Channel 7 show has, in a major coup, secured the Logies’ headline acts to perform exclusively on their morning-after show rather than on Nine, which hosts the Logies.
In another blow for the Channel 9 breakfast show after a run of unfavourable ratings, rival Sunrise locked in James Bluntand Andy Grammer for their only breakfast TV performances the day after the awards.
Seven often skip the event which is usually a Channel 9 affair, but an insider revealed they couldn’t pass up the opportunity. “Today normally have the Logies to themselves; they normally have all the acts and winners on their show, so this is big,” an insider said.
“Exclusivity with performances is a big deal for the brekkie shows, and they would both have definitely been working overtime to try and get the acts.
“Nine are said to be pretty furious that their team has allowed this to happen; it is a bit of an egg-on-your-face moment when you can’t secure the acts from the Logies when you air the Logies.”
Today with Karl Stefanovicand Lisa Wilkinson will broadcast from inside The Crown — the scene of Stefanovic’s famous morning-after incident — whileSunrise’s Samantha Armytage andDavid Koch will be on the banks of the Yarra outside.
This is a backflip for the Sunrise team who were vocal about their absence last year.
On the night of last year’s awards Armytage posted a photo on Instagram of her lying on the couch at home.
Keeping the momentum in the ratings could be another reason for Channel 7’s decision to broadcast from the event.
Today host Stefanovic’s personal life has been blamed for the show’s lacklustre audience numbers this year.
While he is currently on leave, a Nine spokeswoman confirmed he would be attending the Logies.
