Youths have shut down Iremo road in Ile-Ife, Osun State and forced residents to remain indoor while protesting the killing of another youth simply identified as Yemi.

The 27-year old Yemi was allegedly shot dead by the police on Friday at a naming ceremony in Iremo, Ile-Ife after an altercation between him and the police team who attempted to arrest him as an Advanced Fraud (Yahoo Boy) suspect.

The enraged youths paralysed all commercial activities in Iremo area. They started fire on the major road, beating those passing by mercilessly, seizing mobile phones and damaging properties at the road side.

They also forced those going to church back home.
The efforts of the police to halt the protest have not been successful as the youths are regrouping in other spots despite the teargas used by the police. They are seen throwing dangerous objects at the combined team of Nigeria Army, Police and Nigeria Civil Defence Corps.

The youths did not also spare pressmen. A journalist who was trying to record the protest with camera was wounded and his camera was seized.

An eye witness, Mr Adam Seyidu told our correspondent that the deceased was killed in a gruesome manner by the police.

He said the police team came to a naming ceremony and identified three guys as yahoo boys. His words, “the harassment of the alleged yahoo boys triggered serious altercation with the police and a police officer mistakenly shot them killing one instantly and injuring the remaining two who are currently receiving treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital.”

While profusely crying, he express that the deceased was a loyal and respectful man and that the deceased even came to visit him before proceeding together to the naming ceremony.

But as at the time of filing this report, the security presence at the area has become heavier to curtail the violent demonstration.
