BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May has called a snap general election for June 8.
Mrs May made the announcement moments ago outside 10 Downing Street in Westminster.
The announcement comes despite Downing Street officials repeatedly insisting there would be no early election.
It will give Mrs May the opportunity to pursue her own mandate, after she inherited the prime ministership following the resignation of David Cameron in the wake of the Brexit referendum last July.
The pound slumped in the hour between the press conference was announced and Mrs May’s statement was delivered.
