A MALE roommate is being held by police after the body of a 28-year-old woman who studied deaf education was found with a bullet wound.
Janet Mejia was reported missing by another roommate last Wednesday (AEST) after saying she was driving from her home in Foothill Farms in Sacramento County, California. She then failed to report for work at the Nordstrom department store in Roseville in nearby Placer County.
She had recently graduated from California State University Sacramento where she studied deaf education with the goal of becoming an interpreter.
Her car, a blue 2011 four-door Honda, was found the next day in Arden-Arcade, which is about a 15 minutes’ drive from her home.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department issued a plea for help, as phone calls to Mejia went to voicemail and text messages were not answered. this was out of character for Mejia, who kept in daily contact with her family.
In an interview with Fox 40, Mejia’s sister Daisy Mejia said police found her credit card in the parking lot of the Nordstrom department store.
Elvia Gutierrez, a friend who grew up with Mejia in Stockton, told The Sacramento Bee that Mejia had a degree from CSUS in American Sign Language and deaf studies. She was working at Nordstrom while looking for a job in her major field.
“She was just one of the best people,” Gutierrez said of Mejia. “She had ambitions and dreams, and she wanted to help others. We have to live that legacy for her.”

Her male roommate, aged in his mid-twenties, was arrested on unrelated weapons charges on Saturday. Officials told Fox 40 that one of the weapons found could have possibly been used to shoot and kill Mejia.
“Homicide detectives do not believe this was a random murder. A person of interest is currently in custody on unrelated criminal charges pending forensic testing,” Sergeant Tony Turnbull said.
A GoFundMe campaign was originally started with the intention of rewarding anyone with information regarding Mejia’s whereabouts. Now it exists to help with her funeral expenses.
